During my years as a competitive athlete I stayed away from coffee, as it was one of the few performance enhancing substances that was legal and available, to avoid building up a tolerance of caffeine I used it for certain training sessions and competition. Once retired I took to drinking coffee regularly and have since added it to my methodology for peak performance while protecting long term health.
People have been using coffee for a long time and it has recently attracted a lot of attention from researchers. The benefits are many and come from the antioxidants occurring in coffee which protect against degenerative conditions.
The main use of coffee has been for the effects of caffeine on the central nervous system and the brain, increasing physical and mental performance, to include alertness and allowing us, for a time, to exceed our normal levels.
Very widely available, coffee can also be found that is inexpensive. Used properly it is a potent boost to performance. As an athlete I took my coffee in tablet form, very concentrated and losing many of the health benefits. Now I use the more conventional method of drinking, unconventionally, with a straw.
