COFFEE (the how)

My personal routine for drinking coffee begins with waking, where I definitely do not drink coffee. If you need coffee to wake up then there is something wrong with your sleep, which needs to be fixed. Over the 2 hours after waking I drink up to two litres of water, exercise and then start drinking coffee.

I use a percolator with an automatic function to brew the coffee. Paper filter added to the coffee basket for additional straining, important to reduce some compounds that may disrupt the body's natural cholesterol regulating mechanisms, it also reduces the staining effect of coffee on teeth.

Coffee is prepared the night before and the timer set so it is ready for consumption come eight AM. When at home I drink mostly from a stainless steel coffee mug through a stainless steel straw with a rubber sipping end. The straw is to minimise stains to my teeth, the rubber end is to prevent lips being burnt by hot coffee. I do have travelling cups, no spill, and travelling straws.

I will drink coffee typically until I break my fast (that is, eat solids) , around 3 PM. After 1 PM I consume ‘bulletproof’ coffee, that is adding coconut oil and butter, or if feeling really fancy, a ‘keto latte’. Usually I have to brew a second pot due to the heavy demand in the Stokes household for coffee in the morning. I- do not use fresh coffee for this, but the same as before, resulting in a weaker brew which is perfect for the afternoon.

Typically you should stop coffee by 2PM, as it takes about six hours for your body to process the caffeine down to levels which are not significant, and would impact sleep. Some people are either highly adapted or genetically able to process much faster, you will know if you fall into these categories.

On weekends I consume much less coffee, maybe none (coffee fast) but when I do it is usually grounding the beans myself and using a French press before straining into a cup. Definitely pleasure not performance.
