As a young businessman I was complaining to a mentor about a competitor who was using his ability to buy fuel meant for aircraft to fuel his fleet of trucks. Since aircraft fuel attracted much less tax, he was making massive profits. I complained that this was illegal. ' It may be of dubious legality' he said, 'but it is shrewd'.
Shrewd, practical hardheaded cleverness and judgement. Shrewdness is important for peak performance, it does not come naturally to me, but anyone, like myself can improve in shrewdness. It takes practice, fortunately their are a lot of opportunities in everyday life to exercise shrewdness. The next time you are confronted with a situation to understand, a decision to be made, make consideration of the shrewd thing to do one of your conditions.
Slow down, relax, do not get flustered, use relaxation techniques
Assess where your information is coming from and what the bias is, there is no such thing as an unbiased position.
Consider your interests, what would suit you. Look for the angle.
Legality?
Moral and ethical considerations, they need to be thought about, but in the real world they are not the be all and end all of action.
My experience of being shrewd is that you will never get permission if you seek it. Act, be prepared for the consequences, remember you can always beg.
