ASPIRIN (what & why)

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Aspirin is the only drug I take, and it is a drug and I take it everyday. The active compound in aspirin has been used by people medicinally for at least 3,000 years, by consuming the bark of the Willow Tree Of course along with the ‘active substance’ came many other things in the bark of the Willow Tree, whose benefits may be lost to antiquity. The modern form was registered in 1899 and has remained largely unchanged.

Aspirin has been used most recently as an aid to cardiovascular health, due to its blood thinning properties, this has recently lost favour with the medical community, with many considering the risks to outweigh the benefits of aspirin.

What are these risks? The major one is bleeding, internally in the gut, nausea and stomach pain are also listed but are probably related to the major condition, bleeding. If bleeding happens over a period of time then other conditions can develop, some life threatening.

The benefits of aspirin are many; the ones most documented are pain relief, lowering of fever, and the relief of inflammation. I suspect from my own experience that it is doing far more than that in the body.

Aspirin is widely available and cheap, SI lo ES. I use it daily because of the aches and pains from a very active lifestyle and for the anti-inflammatory properties. Exercise leads to inflammation in the muscles, aspirin is good at dealing with inflammation, and compared to the alternatives, cheaper and safer.

Bleeding from the gut I suspect is worsened by the terrible condition of the gut microbiome in most. You have to make sure your gut is in good shape before using aspirin for health and performance. A good probiotic supplement, eating healthy, whole foods, and not eating for at least 10 consecutive hours each day will put you on the way to good gut health
